Your first editable SmartArt
Connect your AI assistant, describe your diagram, and download files you can edit in Word and PowerPoint.
Start with a single diagram, then add the SmartArt skill to build complete reports and presentations.
Plugin 0.3.0. After upgrading, refresh the MCP connection and replace or reinstall the SmartArt skill so the updated tools load.
1 Choose your assistant
2 Connect your account
Follow the steps for your assistant. When it asks you to sign in, use your NativeDiagram account and allow access.
Name
NativeDiagram
Server URLhttps://nativediagram.com/mcp
Claude (web & desktop)
Add to Claude ↗- Open NativeDiagram in the Claude directory and click Connect.
- Sign in to NativeDiagram and choose Allow.
- In a chat, enable it from the + menu → Connectors.
On Team and Enterprise, an owner may need to add it under Organization settings → Connectors first. Claude Code signed in with the same Claude account picks up the connection automatically.
Add it as a custom connector instead
Use this if the directory listing is unavailable to you. Open Customize → Connectors ↗, click +, choose Add custom connector, name it NativeDiagram and paste this URL, then click Add and Connect. Leave advanced client ID and secret fields empty.
https://nativediagram.com/mcp
Use one connection only: if you later add the directory connector, remove the custom one to avoid duplicate tools. Official Claude guide.
Claude Code
Already connected NativeDiagram in Claude? Claude Code signed in with the same Claude account picks up that connection automatically; check /mcp. For the skill and connection together, use the development plugin in step 3 below. After loading it, run /mcp, select its NativeDiagram server, and choose Authenticate.
Connect without the skill
claude mcp add --transport http nativediagram https://nativediagram.com/mcp
Start Claude Code, run /mcp, select nativediagram and choose Authenticate. This adds the connection only; skip it if you use the plugin.
ChatGPT
- Open Settings → Apps (called Plugins or Connectors on some plans) → Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode.
- Choose Create, enter the name and the MCP server URL, and select OAuth authentication.
- Confirm, sign in, and choose Allow. Enable it in a chat from the tools menu.
Developer mode availability depends on your ChatGPT plan and workspace settings.
OpenAI Codex (CLI, IDE extension & app)
- In the desktop app, open Settings → MCP servers → Add server.
- Enter NativeDiagram, select Streamable HTTP, and paste the server URL above.
- Save, then select Restart. Select Authenticate to sign in to NativeDiagram and allow access.
- Start a task and type
/mcpto check available servers, then send the example below.
In the IDE extension, open the gear menu → MCP servers and restart the extension after saving. See the official setup guide if your interface differs.
Command line or manual configuration
codex mcp add nativediagram --url https://nativediagram.com/mcp
codex mcp login nativediagram
Or add this to ~/.codex/config.toml, then run codex mcp login nativediagram:
[mcp_servers.nativediagram]
url = "https://nativediagram.com/mcp"
Cursor
Add to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (or .cursor/mcp.json in a project):
{
"mcpServers": {
"nativediagram": {
"url": "https://nativediagram.com/mcp"
}
}
}
Open Settings → MCP and click Connect next to nativediagram to sign in.
VS Code (GitHub Copilot)
Add to .vscode/mcp.json, or run MCP: Add Server from the Command Palette and choose HTTP:
{
"servers": {
"nativediagram": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://nativediagram.com/mcp"
}
}
}
Click Start above the server entry and sign in when prompted. Use it in Copilot Chat's Agent mode.
Gemini
Gemini CLI — add to ~/.gemini/settings.json, then run /mcp auth nativediagram:
{
"mcpServers": {
"nativediagram": {
"httpUrl": "https://nativediagram.com/mcp"
}
}
}
Gemini app — at gemini.google.com open Settings → Connected Apps → Add a custom app and paste the MCP server URL. Currently limited to personal Google accounts in the US.
Grok
Grok's custom connectors (Business and Enterprise) don't complete OAuth sign-in yet, so use an API key. With the xAI API:
import os
from xai_sdk import Client
from xai_sdk.chat import user
from xai_sdk.tools import mcp
client = Client(api_key=os.environ["XAI_API_KEY"])
chat = client.chat.create(
model="grok-4.6",
tools=[mcp(server_url="https://nativediagram.com/mcp", server_label="nativediagram", authorization=os.environ["DIAGRAM_API_KEY"])],
)
chat.append(user("Use the Native SmartArt skill if available, and use NativeDiagram to create native, editable SmartArt with these steps: Plan, Build, Test. Provide Word and PowerPoint downloads."))
print(chat.sample().content)
Claude API & OpenAI API
Pass the MCP server URL with an API key. Claude API (Python):
import os
import anthropic
client = anthropic.Anthropic()
response = client.beta.messages.create(
model="claude-opus-5",
max_tokens=16000,
betas=["mcp-client-2025-11-20"],
mcp_servers=[{
"type": "url",
"url": "https://nativediagram.com/mcp",
"name": "nativediagram",
"authorization_token": os.environ["DIAGRAM_API_KEY"],
}],
tools=[{"type": "mcp_toolset", "mcp_server_name": "nativediagram"}],
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Use the Native SmartArt skill if available, and use NativeDiagram to create native, editable SmartArt with these steps: Plan, Build, Test. Provide Word and PowerPoint downloads."}],
)
print(response.content)
OpenAI Responses API (Python):
import os
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI()
response = client.responses.create(
model="gpt-5",
tools=[{
"type": "mcp",
"server_label": "nativediagram",
"server_url": "https://nativediagram.com/mcp",
"headers": {"Authorization": f"Bearer {os.environ['DIAGRAM_API_KEY']}"},
"require_approval": "never",
}],
input="Use the Native SmartArt skill if available, and use NativeDiagram to create native, editable SmartArt with these steps: Plan, Build, Test. Provide Word and PowerPoint downloads.",
)
print(response.output_text)
Any other MCP client that supports custom headers works the same way: Authorization: Bearer nd_…
3 Create your first diagram
In a new chat with NativeDiagram enabled, send this request. You get a preview plus Word and PowerPoint files. Each successful diagram uses 1 credit.
Use the Native SmartArt skill if available, and use NativeDiagram to create native, editable SmartArt with these steps: Plan, Build, Test. Provide Word and PowerPoint downloads.
Next: reports and slides
Once your first diagram works, add the SmartArt skill so your assistant can write a complete Word report or PowerPoint deck with the diagram inside.
Add the SmartArt skill
The skill guides your assistant in choosing layouts, keeping your content intact, and delivering editable files. It can preview templates and check insert size before placing a diagram into Word or PowerPoint.
- Download the ZIP file above. Keep it zipped.
- Open Claude → Customize → Skills ↗.
- Choose + → Create skill → Upload a skill, then select the downloaded ZIP.
- Find native-smartart in the list and turn it on. Keep the NativeDiagram connector enabled for your chat.
If upload is unavailable, check that Code execution and file creation is enabled in Settings → Capabilities. Team permissions may require your administrator's help. Official skill guide.
Try it: “Use the Native SmartArt skill and NativeDiagram to create an editable process: Plan, Build, Test.”
Download the ZIP, then ask Codex to install it for you. Give it the actual location of your downloaded file when asked:
Install the native-smartart skill from the ZIP I downloaded from NativeDiagram into my personal skills directory. Ask me for the file location if needed. Check that the skill is discoverable and that the NativeDiagram MCP connection is available. Do not generate a diagram yet.
Install the files manually
Extract the ZIP. Move the native-smartart folder into .agents/skills/ inside your home folder. Create those folders if needed.
The resulting path is ~/.agents/skills/native-smartart/SKILL.md. Keep the included agents folder alongside it.
Check the Skills list for Native SmartArt. In CLI / IDE, use /skills or type $native-smartart. If it does not appear, restart Codex. The skill's connection dependency still requires your authorization.
Try it in CLI / IDE: $native-smartart Create an editable process: Plan, Build, Test.
This package includes the skill and MCP configuration. It is a local testing package, not an official marketplace installation.
- Extract the ZIP and locate the
nativediagramdirectory. - Start Claude Code with
claude --plugin-dir /absolute/path/to/nativediagram, replacing the example path with your extracted directory. - Use
/mcpto authenticate the plugin's NativeDiagram connection. If you already added it manually, use one connection for generation to avoid duplicate tool listings. - Invoke
/nativediagram:native-smartart Create an editable process: Plan, Build, Test.
Use the flag each time you launch this development package. Official plugin guide.
NativeDiagram's public plugin is not available yet. On ChatGPT web, the planned plugin will bundle this skill with the connection. The Claude ZIP-upload instructions do not apply to ChatGPT web.
You can try generation through your custom connection now. If you use Codex locally, choose Codex above for standalone skill installation.
You can use NativeDiagram through the connection above. Skill installation differs by client; we do not yet provide verified skill instructions for this client.
Create a complete document
Requires the skill, document or presentation tools, file downloads, and Python with lxml in your assistant's environment. The assistant should check these first. Skill availability varies by client.
Two-page Word report
Use the Native SmartArt skill together with your available document tools to create a two-page project startup report in Word. Include objectives, a Plan → Build → Test process as native editable SmartArt, a responsibilities table, and key risks. Use the bundled insertion script, inspect the final pages, and deliver one complete DOCX, not a separate diagram. If the required local tools are unavailable, explain that before generating.
Two-slide PowerPoint briefing
Use the Native SmartArt skill together with your available presentation tools to create a two-slide project briefing. Slide 1: objectives and the decision requested. Slide 2: a native editable Plan → Build → Test SmartArt process with owner responsibilities beside it. Use the bundled insertion script, inspect both final slides, and deliver one complete PPTX. If the required local tools are unavailable, explain that before generating.
The diagram follows the document's theme, so colors may differ from the standalone preview. Composing the downloaded diagram locally does not use another credit.
Need help?
I cannot find the add or connect button
On Team or Enterprise, ask your organization owner to add NativeDiagram under Organization settings → Connectors, then connect it yourself. If the directory listing does not open for your account, add it as a custom connector instead.
Custom connections depend on your plan and workspace permissions. If Developer mode or Create is unavailable, ask your administrator or use another supported assistant. NativeDiagram is not yet listed in the public plugin directory.
In the desktop app, open Settings → MCP servers. The IDE extension uses its gear menu. If your version differs, use the official guide linked above or the command-line instructions.
Check the selected client's setup instructions and whether your organization permits external tools. API access and a chat subscription are separate products.

request_id, a request UUID) and ask your assistant to resume with it. A completed request returns the original files without another charge. If you do not have that ID, check your dashboard before requesting another generation: the first may have completed. For a text or layout limit, try shorter labels without removing important steps. For an exhausted allowance, check your account's remaining credits and reset date.
